I am grateful that I got to hang out with my sister all weekend, and that she is happy.

weather and bike

Today I am grateful for the oddly warm but grey weather. The changeable weather is one of my favorite things about San Francisco. And today the weather was pleasant but melancholy, which suited my mood just fine.

I'm also grateful that my life is so very local. A 15 or 20 minute bike ride and I'm home from work. It's good.

Zen and friend

Tonight, I am grateful for Becki and her wisdom, perspective, and humor. And also for dinner. And she is also a good hugger. Not everyone is, but she is.

Becki also reminded me to be grateful that I wake up each morning to a blissful absence of construction sounds from the street below my window.

And there's more! I am grateful to have a new years retreat at Green Gulch to look forward to. I had resigned myself to just going to Zen Center for the new year's eve celebration, but I am thrilled to be able to go up to Green Gulch for 6 whole days instead. I've come to treasure having a place to go and meditate and reflect on the past year and the year to come, and Green Gulch Farm is a beautiful place.

a little behind

I've fallen a bit behind on the gratitude blog, but I do distinctly remember being grateful yesterday for the San Francisco Zen Center. I went to zazen and the dharma talk. Zazen was what it was (as it always is). It is a very good thing to have someplace to go and do it with other people. I am grateful that even when I fall behind on my daily meditation, I have saturday mornings at Zen Center to ground me.

The dharma talk was especially engaging. It was Ed Brown, who wrote the Tassajara cookbooks. I've actually done a one day sitting with him before, and did not get anything special out of it, but parts of his talk yesterday really came through to me. He spoke about the idea that some people have that if you meditate, you will become immune to negative emotions and stress and the like, but of course that is not true. And he spoke of relating to people and things in the world, and the importance of that. And it made sense, particularly in a moment where I have been struggling and fighting the urge to shut things out.

I'm grateful that Zen Center exists and that is near my house.

So, that's yesterday....

And today I am grateful that I got through the 10K run, and for the good company and food that followed.

a new project

I am grateful to have an exciting new project to work on. A Streetcar Named Desire (but all topsy turvy style). Yay!

work

I'm generally grateful to have a job that pays me well for working part time, and specifically grateful for having something interesting to work on (javascript... geeky fun!)

opportunities

Today I am grateful that creative opportunities come my way, particularly in times when I am having trouble generating them myself.

a sweater and good friends

Well, this is stuff that happened yesterday, but I am still grateful for these things this morning. Yesterday I was feeling a bit rough when I joined Nat and ODK for afternoon cocktails. A little time with these ladies reminded me that I am lucky to have wonderful friends.

Last night I went to see Bill T. Jones at YBCA. The show had some beautiful aspects, but the whole was somewhat lost on me through the haze of my exhaustion (and yes, afternoon cocktails may have played a part). By the time I headed to the show, it was very cold and windy out, and I was on my bike. Erika lent me her sweater for the ride home and it kept me toasty.

Today I am grateful for free things

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Free outdoor music! I might not even go today, but I am happy to be in a city where such things happen. Plus it's a beautiful day. Wow, I really should put some clothes on and go see Okkervil River.
